Lethbridge is a vibrant and active community that has seen intense growth and opportunity over the last few years. The University of Lethbridge continues to expand it’s interest in the environment and our natural resources, specifically with the plans for a new Center for Water Research facility. The Lethbridge College, celebrating it’s 40th anniversary, is advancing it’s technology diplomas with the addition of Wind Turbine Engineering program and an on site turbine for hands on education. This city is ready to take the next step into a greener future with an advanced curb side recycling program.
The communities desire for a curb side recycling program is loud and clear, it’s Lethbridge’s Waste and Recycling Services and the Lethbridge City Council that are refusing to acknowledge the fact. They even go as far to claim in their Waste and Recycling Services Business Plan 2006-2008 that the reason for not having one, among other reasons, is apathetic citizens. I don’t think anyone from our City Council has ever been to one of the seven recycling drop points on a weekend. Cars line up down the row of bins with people waiting to start sorting papers from plastics and do their part to reduce their global footprint.
With this many concerned and motivated citizens wanting to participate in a greener future for Lethbridge an expanded curb side recycling program like the Blue Bag service in Edmonton would make it easier for everyone to participate. Along with our advanced educational programs focusing on environmental sustainablity and resource managment, the addition of a first class recycling program would put us on a path to being the greenest city in Alberta.
